As all combat airmen have done, these 99th FS fighter
pilots animatedly relive the moments when they shot
down 8 out of 28 German planes downed during dog-
fights over the new Allied beachheads south of Rome,
Jan 27 of 1944. In the background is a P-40L Warhark.

Unit History
99th Pursuit Squadron was formed 10th March,
1941.
99th Pursuit squadron activated on the 22nd March,
1941.
15th May, 1942, the squadron was redesignated the
99th Fighter Squadron.

99th Fighter Squadron inactivated 1st July, 1949

Aircraft flown in combat:
P-39Q Airacobra
P-40L Warhawk
P-47D Thunderbolt (my records show the 99th never
utilized this type in combat, but I will confirm this fact)
P-51B/C and D variants.

Theatres of Combat
MTO and ETO (Mediterranean and European
Theatre of Operations from the 2nd of June, 1943
to the 30th April, 1945.

Served in the following campaigns:
Sicily, Naples-Foggia, Anzio, Rome-Arno, Normandy, both
Northern and Southern France, North Apennines,
Rhineland, Central Europe, Po Valley, Air Combat; EAME
Theater.

Squadron Decorations
:
Distinguished Unit Citations for: actions over Sicily in June and July of 1943, Cassino between the
12th and 14th May, 1944; actions over Germany on the 24th March, 1945
